The Development of SEO in China Has Many Defects

It is undeniable that SEO developed rapidly in China since its appearance. But as far as we know, due to environmental and time constraints, SEO does not develop smoothly and it even brings some negative impacts.

Major Defects:
Because SEO service is an emerging industry in China, there are no laws or regulations to supervise it. Therefore, the market prices in the SEO market are chaotic and in some places cut-throat competition appears.Few people are really familiar with this new technology. In China, there are few books about search engine optimization and top SEO professionals are rare and scarce, so most people could not find the right way to study it. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Some people may misinterpret some SEO concepts and consider the misinterpreted concepts as the right ones. It is harmful to SEO development.Because of lack of the SEO talents, search engine optimization techniques in China are lacking in integrated planning and proper strategy. Each SEO worker does things in his own way and seldom exchanges experiences with others.

All these cause the industry to be short of self-discipline and regulation. If this continues, SEO industry in China will be in great trouble in the near future.

However, although there are many defects in SEO development, I still think the prospect of SEO in China is hopeful. In this industry, only those intelligent ones can help SEO techniques develop well. It is hoped that more and more SEO experts will appear in the future and devote themselves to this promising industry.

Social Networks And SEO

Social media is one of the fast growing search engine optimization systems in today's world. Social networks are usually an option for the small businesses mainly because they are free and they also offer a wide range of apps that can make promoting really easy. However, there is still a need of traditional search engine optimization and online marketing in order to attract traffic on their websites.

Social networks have an important advantage and that is the fact that they offer the business owners the chance to promote their website through the network that they themselves create. As the main role of social networks is to bring together people that share the same interest this is actually a very good way of brand awareness. The marketing idea behind this is that: where there are people there is traffic.

Traffic strategies usually revolve around mobilizing a large number of individuals to try out a new product or service and also to make them visit your website. However, social network marketing does have its downside and that is: the target group. It is a known fact that social network users are aged between approximately 14 and 30 years old. This is why if you have a business or a product that is destined for another age group then using such networks may be a bit difficult.

Something else that you have to bear in mind is the fact that in such places you will have to present your products or your services carefully. This is why you should not take into consideration some of the traditional advertising methods. You have to make sure that the whole concept around the item or service that you are trying to promote makes it appealing to customers. This is why you should ponder what exactly you can promote via social networks and what not.

A search engine optimization campaign is something really important for brand awareness and product advertising. This is why you should do a lot of research before you start such a campaign. Something else that you might do is simply hire a team of specialists to help you.

Why Do You Need A Search Engine Optimisation Consultant?

In any endeavor, getting the right person for the job is a must, especially if you're looking for a search engine optimisation consultant. If you hire someone who is unqualified or does not know how to do the job right, you will end up wasting time and effort. In the case of search engine optimization (SEO)-particularly SEO for small business-you are also risking your company's profits and reputation. Because of a disastrous SEO implementation, your website could be banned from search engines, leading to lesser site traffic and sales, as well as negative public perception towards your company.

This is not to discourage you from getting assistance from a SEO consultant or one of the many SEO companies in Australia. In fact, they can do a lot to improve your website and your online presence. These experts offer search engine optimisation packages that could be tailor made to your company's needs. At the very least, they can review your website for the content and technical aspects. SEO companies in Australia can also do the actual content writing if you do not have the time or resources to do so. Indeed, SEO and web copywriting go hand in hand quite well. You may also want to leverage their expertise in developing and managing SEO campaigns. With the knowledge of different markets (local and global), a reputable SEO consultant can come up with SEO strategy and planning, like provide keyword researches and search-engine friendly CMS (content management system), to pull in quantity and quality in terms of website traffic.

When should you consider getting help from a search engine optimisation consultant? A good time would be when you are planning to redesign your current website or launching a new one. You would want the input of a search engine optimisation consultant as you develop a new website. When interviewing prospects, make sure to do the following:

? Ask for some samples of their work for other clients and describe some of their successes as a search engine optimisation consultant

? Ask if they comply with the SEO guidelines for Google?

? Ask if they have other strategy and planning services aside from doing optimizations for organic searches (e.g. consultation services regarding online marketing)

? Ask how long before clients see the results of the SEO effort and what kind of results can be expected. Also, ask what the success criteria are (i.e. how can they tell that the SEO effort is successful)

? Ask about experience as a SEO in your industry

? Ask about their experience in developing websites for international audiences

? Ask what SEO techniques are important for a top grade SEO consultant

? Ask how long they have been in operation.

Your choice of a SEO consultant will have a big impact on your business, so it is best to do some research first. There are plenty of articles on the Internet comparing SEO strategy and planning, as well as search engine optimisation packages. There are also articles on which SEO companies to avoid. You may also want to get recommendations from acquaintances and friends within your business circle.

The Truth About SEO

In this article I'm going to give you some real truths about SEO and try to clear up any nonsense that you might have heard lately about search engine optimization and ranking websites.

Some may tell you that it takes months and years to rank for certain phrases, and some people tell you that it is not even worth trying to rank for that phrases because it's simply "too" higher competition, well let's discover the real truth, right here on this article...

So, will it take months and years for you to rank your website? - The honest answer is maybe, yep that's the truth it really could take years and months because that is how SEO is, but it all depends on the competition level of the keyword that you want to rank for.

If you are going after long tail keywords then you'll be okay and chances are you'll rank very quickly within a few days or weeks, however if you are going after high competition keywords then it could take months of hard work for you to finally get that ranking you deserve, often big SEO campaigns can be anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, and even then the campaign will need a lot of maintenance to actually keep the SEO ranking where it should be.

So is there a secret ranking method to getting number 1, or ranking quickly?

Nope, there isn't at all, I'm sorry to burst your bubble if that is what you were hoping for, but there really isn't a magic formula that works, SEO can be broken down into many different things be ultimately you can group it into two main things:

1) On-Page SEO
2) Off-Page SEO

On-page SEO is making sure that the content and layout of your website is optimized for your keywords as much as possible. When competition is low on longer tail keywords then link building is not always necessary however when it comes to high competition phrases then link building is absolutely crucial and it is extremely important if you really want to rank well.

Links can be built via many different ways, these include forums, articles, link bait and comments and there's also a range of other methods! - There is no secret formula to links though, and if you create content that is good, people will link to it!

In a perfect world SEO's would not exist because people would create exceptional content that people naturally linked to, but unfortunately because people don't do this, SEO's like myself do exist, we create content, build links, promote content and deal with on-page SEO in order to get the site as optimized as possible for keywords.

If you can create good content, make sure your pages are optimized for your keywords, and you can build links then you will naturally obtain a good search engine ranking.

Understanding the Relevant SEO Approach You Need to Take

Any large or small business makes high efforts to accelerate the sales by choosing the most efficient method at the best rapport for quality and price. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is one of these less costly methods, but very efficient. It can bring traffic to your web site and can transform the maximum of visits into conversions. Online studies taken by experts have disclosed the fact that in the last years, over 85 percent of the Internet users accessed multiple search engines, such as MSN, Google and Yahoo. This is the natural tendency among the Internet users, which will choose whatever is more appropriate and more convenient in their searches. Second of all, all the Internet users have the natural tendency to look for the products they desire by particular keywords that refer to it and describe it in the best possible way. The general purpose is simple - less clicks and a short time. Therefore, it is easy to understand that the web sites that are well optimized by the proper keywords have a better chance to be checked out first.

Your web site optimization for search engines will ensure it will get in the first few search results, at a particular time, if the optimization is correctly done on the proper keywords. The results show up in the first few months, depending on the efforts. They are very stable on a long term. Therefore, the trend of creating a web site even for one product only puts in the light the advantage of a SEO optimization. Another advantage is increasing the reputation of the brand, only by exposing it on the first page of results. SEO optimization makes all these things possible through the techniques and stages it has - marketing analysis, keywords, web directory submission, articles, blogs, forums and so on. Their efficiency increases only when they are used at the right time and only by professionals and not necessary by the business manager. The business manager is supposed to concentrate on the business itself instead.

These are the reasons for which more and more businesses prefer to externalize this service towards the SEO specialized companies. They have the advantage of experience and this way, they will take away the stress for the business manager. Therefore, you can pay one time and have some long term advantages. The more your name and web sites is on the first page of search results, the more you can experience the constant traffic. From this traffic, you will win loyal clients, thanks to the positive publicity generated through content posting on high reputation web sites. In time, SEO has become at least as important as regular marketing techniques. It is well known that more and more people use Internet to define their searches. However, when it comes to web based companies, such as web design firms, discussion boards, hosting or domain companies and online shops, SEO is not an option, but a must. Do it properly and your business will raise automatically.

The 6 Rules of Online Local Business Listings

Local SEO is a goldmine, and the major local listing services have become a big part of the equation. Those that do not take advantage of it are among the majority of small business owners (for now). A full on search engine optimization campaign is time consuming, intricate and expensive. However, there are some SEO related things anyone can do to increase a business' online presence. This means, if as a small business you can look beyond your daily tasks and spend just a little bit of time seeing to these basic 6 steps (listed below), you will be far ahead of the competition, or at least keeping up with the top players in your niche online (as far as local listings are concerned).

1. Claim your company's profile(s)

It is likely that somehow somebody (or something) created a listing for you business on one of the major local listing services out there already. As a business owner, you must own and control this. If your business is newer, or just not listed online at all, this is even more important. Either way, simply log into Google Places, Yahoo Local, and Bing Local and create or claim the listing profile that is rightfully yours. If it already existed, chances are that some information is incorrect, or that a lot of information is missing; at best. At worst, someone else created this listing because they are were so moved by their experience with your company that they wanted to tell the world about it, and it is usually because they were disappointed by a product or service you offer. If this is the case, then it is definitely time to claim the listing and get some positive reviews in there too to balance out your company's online reputation.

2. Add Pictures

The local listing sites love to offer an enhanced experience to their users above and beyond what a phonebook would offer, so it makes sense that when you add more interactive features like pictures and video, they will bump you to the top. Photos are an absolute must, and you can start with your company logo. From there photos of your staff, your storefront, inventory, or happy customers can go a very long way. Do not worry if you think your storefront, staff, or anything else don't look commercial perfect. People want to see the real side of your business. Yes, it is a good idea to look your best, but don't be fake and over done either.

3. Add Video

Video is seen by most users as not better or worse than pictures, but just another addition that gives more legitimacy to the user experience. Video also show the listing services & search engines that you are serious. If pictures are an enhancement, then video is an above-and-beyond bonus feature. The video you upload doesn't have to be a professionally produced television-style advertisement. In fact an informative narrated PowerPoint presentation uploaded to YouTube and embedded into your local listing is more effective than an advertisement on many levels.

Other small businesses have found success in embedding customer video testimonials taken with a simple hand held video camera or webcam. I say do it all. At this point in the game, you can't go wrong with video, nor do too much of it. Just be sure to keep each video under 60 seconds. The "now" mentality of people on the Internet is a strange dynamic; while they can never make time to watch one 20 minute video, they seem to have more than enough time to watch twenty 1 minute videos in a row.

4. Control information about your business online

You are what you publish, especially online. If there is a local listing on one website with incorrect information, it is a certainty that other aggregator websites will pick it up and republish it. If this happens, it will make it more difficult for potential customers to find your business, and it is a mess of time and energy to track this stuff down to the source and clean it up. So start with the big directories (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) and get the information in correctly and claim the listings by verifying with these services that they belong to you. Then track down all the other listing services you can (Yelp, Best of the Web, Foursquare, Merchant Circle, etc.) and start claiming those as well.

5. Lots and lots of customer reviews

Ask customers to review your business on different sites (start with Google Places and then expand). Ask on your website, on your Facebook Page, and on email signatures of outgoing customer emails. Not only do the reviews (good and bad) make you more credible to future customers, but the search engine based listing services love reviews. With all other variables being equal, if you have more customer reviews in your Google Places page than your competition, you are much more likely to be listed above the competition.

Keep in mind that there are customers that are not so happy with you and your business, and they are online too. A few bad reviews is not a bad thing, while you don't want to encourage this, you certainly don't want to be without a few. It makes the good ones that much more believable.

6. You need to have a local phone number and local address

Yes, I said need. Toll free numbers are cool looking, but if you are playing the local business game, the search engine based listing services look on your website to see if the information you submitted is correct. So, if you have an 877 number on your website, and not a local number, the credibility of your Google Places profile just went down. It is also not a bad idea so prospective patrons of your local business can see you are indeed a local company.

Additionally, a clearly listed local address at the footer of every page of your website is a must. People want to be able to see that you are a real business and not a start-up-dreamer running things out of your garage. Also, the local online directories want to (again) be able to validate the information you submitted to them is correct.

Local search is the incredible evolution of the phonebook. While "yellow page" type companies have tried many incarnations of migrating their services to the web, the fact is, they are dinosaurs waiting to become extinct. It is because of the advent of the Internet itself that you, the small business owner, can publish yourself and promote yourself, by yourself and grow your business without any need to rely on traditional forms of mass media from the yellow pages to television and radio. The power is in your hands to gain as much exposure as you would like to have, you just have to go out there and do it. Here is to your success!

Getting The Success That You Need in SEO

Location is what makes or breaks a business, even if you are on the Internet! Since people find what they want online via search engines, becoming successful in online business marketing doesn't involve merely putting up a painted sign. It means ranking high and being on top of the lists whenever someone searches for services that you offer---and this is where Search Engine Optimization or SEO comes in. SEO is a tactic which improvises your search rank. It isn't that hard, but it is often overlooked for all the wrong reasons.

Google, Yahoo, Bing, and all other search engines want to offer quality websites for their users. With this in mind, you need a top-notch website which both customers and search-engines can identify easily. Employing SEO is simply taking advantage of a search engine's propensity to ferret out the most attractive and up-to-date sites and putting them as the most viable in their lists. There are three simple steps to achieve online popularity: Cleaning your site design, reaching out with links, and creating good quality content.

Your site needs to be easy to find and to read. In order to do this, focus on what your target customers would want to search for. There are certain keywords which fit your kind of business that would also easily come to a customer's mind when they think of that certain service that you offer. Having decided on common keywords, be sure that they are appropriate so that both search engines and your customers can easily key them in and find you.

Google and its competitors send millions of dollars annually simply to develop search algorithms that present the highest-quality sites to users. What decides a top-quality website is how well-written it is, and how well maintained and updated the site is on a regular basis. Filling your site with matter which pertain exactly to your brand of business does wonders for rising to the top of the lists.

Search engines generally value a site which has a lot of traffic, that being a site that received a lot of visits. When your business marketing site is seen in the midst of other credible sites, these are clearly pointing at you saying 'check this site out. This site is good!' Practice the art of link exchange, wherein you share links with other sites which share the same range of businesses as you do. You can choose to do this yourself or employ the use of a linkbuilder.

SEO isn't really that intimidating. The Web has a lot of information which you can use to help improve your business marketing site. Just as in normal marketing, knowing your customer and appealing to their likes is what will make you excel in online business marketing, and with the help SEO customers---and earnings---are sure to follow!

SEO Tips: Keyword Distribution

Content writing for SEO is probably one of the most tricky aspects of internal optimisation. There is definitely a skill to adding good copy to a website. The difficulty lies with it having to meet the needs of your target market, it has to read well, it has to portray your business and at the same time it has to make sense to the search engines.

In an ideal world you will have designed your site with your keywords in mind and already have appropriate pages to optimise. Along side your main keywords it has become increasingly important to integrate long-tail keyphrases into your copy (I will expand on long-tail keyphrases at a later date). They tend not to have a high search volume, they are very industry specific, and will usually convert better than the big keywords as they target the buyer at the end of the buying process (the stage when they have researched and know exactly what they want).

Stage two is structuring these throughout your site. Remembering that your content has to be written for your audience but with maximum emphasis on your chosen keyword. Search engines for all they can do they are limited by what you feed them. Below I will outline the best practices for distributing your keywords throughout your site.

1. Heading tags need to be structured chronologically, making the h1 the most important and needs to include your main keyword. Your h2 will be your second most important keyword, and working down the page. Ideally do not try and optimise for more than 3 keywords per page.

2. You should try to include an exact copy of the keyword from the heading within the first paragraph, and at least once more naturally throughout the text.

3. For maximum effect put strong tags around the first reference of your keyword.

4. Integrate variations of your keyword and long-tail keyphrases naturally throughout your copy.

5. If it is possible include them in a list.

6. Finally optimise your page title tag with your main keywords. Google has a limit to the number of characters it will display so bare this in mind.

7. Google has a limit of 70 characters for their page titles, be clever it needs to show the user your site is what they are looking for, at the same time its a prime position for your keywords.

8. Meta description: Again has a limit to the number of characters. You need to grab the attention of anyone reading to ensure they follow it through to your site.

9. Keyword tag thanks to poor SEO practices it does not hold the weight it once did. There is no limit on length, but only include the keywords you are optimising that page for.

10. Make sure that point 7, 8 and 9 is unique throughout every page of your site.

11. Any images throughout your site should be appropriate for you to add a keyword rich description in the alt tag. An alt tag is an alternative description for an image allowing users that are visually impaired to understand the site, so don't abuse them!

Ensure you copy is written in a manor that reflects your business, keep it professional but there is no harm in adding some humor if it is fitting, keep your paragraphs concise and to the point. Finally rope in a few friends and family to read your copy before publishing it, the more critical the better (just as I am about to do now...).

The Design Of A Website And SEO

There are many reasons that a business owner might be interested in redesigning his/her website and one of them could be the fact that it has poor results in search engine optimization. If you have out dated content on your site or it works slows then you should really consider face-lifting your site.

An old website will get almost no traffic and will actually be ignored by such engines therefore becoming a black hole for your money. This is why you should take the time and analyze it carefully. Here are some things that you will have to look for on your site if you want to make a profit and increase sales figures.

It is true that the search engine technology has made some important advances but still having a website with a lot of flash will be quite troublesome. Even if the content is up to date, the search engine spiders will not read it simply because they can't. However, the sites of the major corporations have a lot of flash but still they are ranked very good. This actually happens because they have an extraordinary high rate of links. So if you cannot compare yourself to them then you should avoid flash.

If you have splash pages on your website then you surely are making a good impression on your visitors but not so much on the SEO spiders. As such pages usually don't have much content on them, nor links and are full of flash. This is why the rankings are horrible and the traffic on that website is very low.

The out of date content is a real problem both for human readers and for search engines. If you ignore to post something new every day or at least twice a week then the SEO engines will think that your site is dead and will no longer look at it. When and if this happens then you will lose a lot of your traffic. Search engine campaigns are very important because they can do wonders for your rankings, traffic and also you profit. So, why don't you consider starting one?

SEO Tips - Bring Your SEO Skills To A Higher Level!

4 Ways to Rise to the Top in Google Places and Google Maps

Smart phones have changed everything when it comes to local Internet search. Between the iPhone and Google Android based smart phones alone, companies are reporting upwards of a half million account activations daily! While somewhere between 15% and 20% of all searches on the web are done from smart phones these days, nearly 75% of ALL searches online no matter the device have to do with searching for local information. Let us not forget that nearly two thirds of all Americans search for local businesses online. It is time to get your Google Places page whipped into shape!

Google Places is a force to be reckoned with for certain. Not too long ago, Google changed the format of its search results page to include maps and local listings. This means that even if your actual website is not ranking on page one, yet, you can still get your Google Places page a front row seat in the meantime. Additionally, once you do get your website ranking on the first page, now you have two mentions on Google's page one of your business instead of just one.

Please note that because of the recent enhancements Google has made to the search results page, local listings have become very competitive. Once upon a time, one could simply create a business listing on Google and get noticed. Things are a bit different going into 2011, and you can bet they will continue to evolve. For now, here are four action items you can do to make it way more likely you show up in the top 7 local search results Google displays on the first page:

1. Include product or service keywords in your listing description.

It is smart to casually mention one or two cities or towns you service and sell to, but DO NOT over do this and do not throw city names into strange fields elsewhere on your page; this can be more damaging than helpful. It is good general practice to not over use key words anyway. Most importantly, make sure your description is written for people to read, not search engines.

2. Make sure your Google Places profile is 100% complete.

When you are creating or editing your listing, you will notice in the right margin a percentage score of how complete your profile is. This must be 100% if you want Google Places to work for you at all. There are more than 20 different elements you can fill in and they all need to be complete. Having a 100% score can mean the difference between showing up on the front page of Google Places (or in the first 7 Google Places results on the regular Google search results page).

3. Get a handful of client reviews on your Google Places page.

This can be the tiebreaker that makes the difference between being seen and not being seen. This is especially true in more competitive local markets. If all of your competition is sporting a 100% completion score on their profile page, what do you suppose both Google and prospective customers browsing the web will look for next? The review portion of your Google Places profile is mostly influenced by people outside your immediate control, and is therefore a variable Google is most likely to use to break ties in the case of ranking one listing above another. Across the board, you are doing really well if you 10 legitimate customer reviews working for you. Most Google Places profiles don't get near 10 reviews.

4. Get listed and claim your profile in all of the top local directory services.

This does sound a little backwards as we are talking specifically about Google Places here, but Google is a search engine company looking to continually validate its existence by providing the freshest most accurate data possible. This means that they are constantly looking at thousands of third party sources to ensure the data it has is correct. If you are not listed anywhere else, it may effect your ability to show up on the first page at all. To start you may want to consider the following: Yahoo Local, Bing Local, Yelp, Best of the Web, Hotfrog, and Foursquare. The same rules go for any of these listing services. Make the profiles as complete as absolutely possible!

Utilizing local listings on the Internet has always been considered a good practice, just as being in the phone book was just a good idea 20 years ago, but now local listings are vital. It has been considered a good SEO practice, but now it is essential to any SEO campaign. If you follow the guidelines in this article, you will at least have a good start in getting noticed and getting that phone to ring a little more.

Important Tips for Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of website or a web page in search engine. SEO target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specify vertical search engines. This gives a website web presence.

SEO are specialized techniques used to optimize your web site, to be Search engine friendly and increase your chances of placing well in searches. Learning proper SEO techniques can be like a daunting task, especially to those who are not familiar with the concept.

Here are some important points you should keep in mind when developing and marketing your website.

1. Make sure that your website is initially designed with your search engine optimization needs. The trendiest web designs will mean nothing if no one is able to find your site.

2. Every page of your website has a title tag with text describing either your site or what is on the page. Be sure the text includes SEO-type keywords instead of the name of your website.

3. Every page on your website should include a link to your home page and your site-map. Make sure every link is the same. Home page links should go directly to your domain.Make sure your internal links do not include the additional /index.html or.php text as it is not needed.

4. You will hear the same phrase over and over again: "Content is king". It is imperative that your website have fresh, unique, and quality content that is updated on a regular basis. Be sure to include your favorite keyword phrase within the body of the content!

5. People are more likely to input a phrase instead of a single word when conducting internet searches. Try to use long keywords this will increase the chances of your site being seen in location searches.

Search engine optimization is much more than a few techniques or tips. SEO is a field of expertise, which requires a strong understanding of all aspects related to SEO before you can truly learn SEO.

3 Voodoo Ninja Jedi Tricks For Personal Trainers Wanting To Master Search Engine Optimisation

Personal Trainers generally fret, or panic over Search Engine Optimization.

They think it is some ninja jedi voodoo slight of hand trick.

Or, that it is some special club that you must pay an SEO expert 10's of thousands of dollars/pounds/euros to be a member of.

Or, maybe it is some magic trick performed by those geeky wizards who've "cracked the code" (BTW, if I use the phrase "cracked the code" in any of my copy, feel free to shoot me!)

Or, even worse it is something that is only possible if you spend every waking minute optimizing, testing and refining to get ranked.

This one post will reveal ONLY what is important, try not to get distracted by what you may have been told before about SEO, what follows comes from my own obsession to find the "right" answers, investing a huge amount of time and money in getting the "right" education to understand this stuff properly.

So here is what is important for SEO:

1. Domain Name
2. Popularity
3. Content

Seriously that is IT!

Anything else you have been told is basically wrong, misleading or dangerous. Let me go through each one in a bit more detail.

Domain Name:

Do NOT think flashy, cool, funky, bizarre, clever, a play on words... None of that helps for SEO

Instead think "Keywords" or more accurately

"What do you want to be found for on Google?"

If you are a personal trainer in the Highgate area of London, you MUST own the domain, personaltrainerhighgate.com That is what your prospects are searching for, Google LOVES exact match domain names and will rank you above more popular sites just because you have the exact keywords in your domain.

(BTW if you are in Highgate, this domain is AVAILABLE at time of writing, go get it guys!)

Popularity:

This is basically how many people visit your site, comment on your content, and link to your site from other places on the web.

Google knows how many people visit your site using Google Analytics (HINT... this must be set up on your website by you)

Google recognises when someone comments on your stuff, and sees that the page is regularly updated (HINT #2 easier done if your site is a BLOG using WordPress)

Google is clever enough to collect data on who links to your site, some links are more valuable than others (HINT #3 make sure you are getting people to link back to your site!)

Google works on an Algorithm, the more links, more visitors, more activity for your site, the higher the score, the higher you appear on Google rankings.

Content:

Basically an extension of popularity. If you produce some good content, more people will visit, comment and link back, creating more visitors, comments and links. So the key here is to produce some damn good stuff people would like to link to.

So you can see this is not about "gaming" the system (Google is way cleverer than you), this is not about about any great magic trick, or secret system!

It's all about people who are looking for your stuff, finding you, liking your stuff and choosing to link to your stuff.

Go buy that domain right now before your competitors do. Then get a WordPress site/BLOG built on to that domain and fill it with your best stuff.

Then do yourself a favour and link back to your site by commenting below to increase your "perceived" popularity (more on that in the next article)

Search Engine Optimisation Outlined in Simple English

So you have just been given a 12 page search engine optimisation campaign proposition, however the only thing you can figure out is how much you will need to fork out from month to month. The other terms are in an unknown language that you've never heard of and consist of words such as page ranking, current position in Google, key phrase demand and competition. simply to point out a few!

Don't lose hope, with this easy SEO article, you'll be able to appear to be a pro soon!

A SEO campaign (search engine optimisation campaign) is aimed at increasing the rankings of a webpage in search engines which would in turn result in more guests (and hopefully more business) to your site.

There are a couple of factors that would have an effect on your positioning on search engines:

Page ranking: Page ranking is a value which is allocated to a webpage based upon how important the search engines find that website to be. This value could be between zero and 10, with zero being a really low pagerank and ten being the greatest possible pagerank. For an internet site to be categorized as important, a page rank of between three and six would be more than acceptable - just a hand full of websites can boast with a page ranking of ten!

Incoming back links: If you have a lot of incoming hyperlinks to your webpage (backlinks from other internet websites to your webpage) this furthermore adds to your websites status and definitely will play an vital role in your search engine rankings.

Keyword research: Prior to a search engine optimisation campaign can begin, it is necessary that proper research is done on your key phrases. The demand (number of searches for your specific search term each month) needs to be weighed against the competition (the amount of sites who competes for the specific key phrase) to decide which keywords are the best to focus on. As an example, if only ten people each month searches for pink polka-dot bikini, and 300 000 websites compete for this search phrase, it would not make sense focusing on this search phrase - the demand is not high enough and the competition too high.

Competitive analysis: This is an analysis of the websites you will be competing against. Their page ranks as well as amount of inbound hyperlinks are two of the variables that will be considered when this research is done.

Current positioning in Google: The existing positioning for a specific search phrase in Google, is the position where your webpage currently shows for the search term in question. Should you be targeting the word insurance, it will be of no use if your webpage only shows up on page twenty five of the insurance results. Internet users seldom searches further than the top 10 results, therefore it is crucial that your website performs well on search engines like Google.

On-site optimisation: This refers to the amount of work that will be necessary to set up your website correctly for SEO purposes. Home page title, key phrases, description tags, meta tags and so on are a handful of important items to check on your existing webpage.

Now that you shall no longer be SEO-uninformed, you can make an informed decision on the search engine optimisation pitch you acquired!

Tools For SEO

Virtually all online SEO tools can be classified into two: paid and free. At first glance, it seems like free tools for SEO have the upper hand. After all, who can say no to no-charge tools? Moreover, a number of them have gained good reputation simply because they work.

Take, for example, Google AdWords Keywords Suggestion Tools. Hundreds of webmasters, Internet marketers, and website owners visit the link every day to look for the most appropriate keywords to use in their website. Because it's developed and maintained by Google, it has earned trust and loyalty from many.

You also have the Google Analytics tool, which keeps track of your website statistics. This comes for free and can be easily embedded into your website for convenient monitoring.

However, a lot of the free tools for SEO lack accuracy and upgrade from their own webmasters. This could be because unless they are getting donations from their patrons, they have very limited finances for upgrades and proper maintenance. They easily hit their maximum bandwidth due to high traffic, and their servers may not be secured from hackers.

This also means they may not be completely accurate. After all, they are not up-to-date. While Google has already changed its algorithms, the SEO tools you're depending on are still stuck in the old versions. Surely you're not going to get the right results because of that.

The top SEO tools will always be the paid ones. For one, you can demand from the webmasters for continuous updates. Furthermore, you can look forward to other great features including conversion of reports to PDF files, customization of reports, 24-hour monitoring, site statistics aggregations, e-mail notifications, and easy-to-use control panel.

Using Rank Checker

As mentioned, there are many SEO tools you can use, but one of the most popular and definitely significant is the rank checker. For you to fully understand its benefits, you have to know the importance of ranking first.

Search engines, especially Google, ranks websites. You will know it by simply determining your webpage's page rank. Now why do they have to do that? They think of their end users or the Internet users. They want to make sure that once they search for a certain information using keywords, the first websites they see are the most relevant to their query.

For a webmaster like you, this means that the closer you are to the top page, the higher is your chance of getting clicked. When you're getting clicks, you're getting traffic, and traffic boosts your chances of converting prospects to customers and selling goods and services.

A rank checker basically does that-tells you where you are in search engines. This way, you can determine the best modes of action to increase your rankings. Nevertheless, a rank checker can do so much more.

You can use it to assess your competitors. You can utilize the tool to know their own rank and identify some of the factors that cause them to be on top. You can make use of a backlinks checker, for instance, to know which sites are bringing traffic into their webpage, boosting their page rank.

Scouring for the best SEO tools may take some time, but once you discover them, the efforts are all worth it.

Learn The SEO Basics To Dominate Your Niche

If I'm going to ask you, what are the things that you need for your website to become a success? The answer would be the proper usage of the SEO basics. Why? Because through the search engine optimization techniques that you will be employing, your website will be more visible in the search results. And the higher the ranking, the more visitors it will get.

Now where can you learn the basics? There are a lot of available resources on the web today, and most of them are free. But later on you may want to improve your knowledge and your skills so may become interested in learning the techniques of the top Internet marketing gurus today. There is nothing wrong in paying to learn advanced methods. Sometimes when you are really serious in mastering a craft, you will have to go through the tutelage of people who are better than you, even if just through a bunch of DVDs or ebooks.

But let us go back to learning a few of the SEO basics so you can start using these on your own website. Keep in mind that these are not definitive and that there are other factors that you may want to research more on.

One of the first things that you need to do is keyword research. Keywords are the foundation of a good search engine optimization. Because think about it. How can you optimize your website if you do not know what keywords you should be targeting? Depending on the scope of your website or the niche you are trying to get into, your keyword research may take you longer to accomplish. This is because you need to study the competition for that keyword and whether you stand a good chance of ranking number one for those terms.

The next one would be the use of the keywords for your on-page optimization. What this means is that your keywords should be visible in the web copy of your website. You should put your keywords in the title, the H1 tag, the image alt tag, the meta description and of course, twice or thrice within the body of the text. You must never over stuff a web page with your keywords, otherwise you might risk getting banned by the search engines. Many SEO experts warn about using too much of the keywords on any website or web page.

When you are done optimizing your website, the next important step would be link building. Links are considered the life blood of search engine optimization and it is what the search engine spiders use to find other relevant websites. Basically, the more links that your website gets from authoritative sites, the better your ranking would be. But the problem is it is often not an easy thing to do to get links from such sites. You might ask, can I just pay for those links? The answer is a big no. The search engines hate the selling and buying of links simply because it is not natural and it games their search results. Just stick to more natural linking methods like link baiting, guest posting, commenting, and similar practices.

These are just some of the SEO basics that you can do for your own website. Practice these and you can see great results within the coming months.

Third Golden Rule on Keyword Research: Competition

This is the third part of a four-part series on the golden rules on keyword research.

To recap, we learned that relevant keywords and high traffic keywords are important in searching for that ultimate keyword or keyword phrase that holds the key to targeted marketing.

In the first two golden rules, it was just all about the keywords. It is interesting to know, then, that in this third golden rule; you are now looking beyond the keyword and involving a third party in the picture. Yes, nobody but your keyword competition.

Third Golden Rule On Keyword Research Is:

Assessing Your Competition.

Do you know the concept behind the franchised TV program, Survivor?

Pitted together in one island are different people from all sorts of backgrounds trying to outwit, outplay, and outlast one another from the competition, which involves show of strength, perseverance, and endurance.

Initially, everybody is grouped according to tribes and they battle it out against the other groups. But every week, someone gets booted out of the island narrowing down the number of competitors until everybody eventually gets to compete with a fellow tribe member.

Following the Survivor analogy, the third golden rule on keyword research involves trying to Outpage, Outrank, and Outlist your keyword competition in Google and other search engines. Your goal is to hit a page one and be in the top ten spots.

There are two major points to consider in choosing your keyword based on competition: (1) amount of competition and (2) strength of competition.

How Market Samurai Helps

Amount of Competition

Market samurai has an SEO competition checkbox feature that allows you to analyze the keywords that you are competing for. Instead of you scouring the entire gamut of the Internet for these keywords, it does the work for you by gathering data. Results will then show you the total number of webpages that mention the keyword phrase in the same word order as you would write it.

Next is for you to use the competition filter. It sifts the high competition phrases from the more accessible keywords. The recommended competition filter value of 30,000 (meaning that the identified keywords have less than 30,000 competing webpages) is a good start in identifying keywords that have acceptable levels of competition.

Strength of Competition

Market Samurai has the SEO Competition Module. To generate an SEO competition matrix, all you have to do is just click the 'Generate Results' button. After which, Market Samurai conducts a real time analysis of the top ten websites in Google for the keyword phrase that you have chosen to check.

A good thing about this matrix is that it's color-coded to give you a quick view of the keyword competition's strength. You could almost always conclude that if there are more green squares appearing in the matrix, it means that the competition is not strong and the keyword is accessible. If there are more orange squares, it means that there is a higher strength of competition. Red squares mean the strongest level of keyword competition.

Why Is Keyword Research Important to Organic SEO?

There has been a surge of Internet marketing mavericks and service providers on the web, and the business category, as such, has become one of the busiest of late. However, Organic SEO is not something that every other online marketer can master in a short span of time, and nor is it a strategy that can be used without apt expertise to bring the promised results.

And one of the most basic follies of the amateur search engine optimization agencies is the fact that they often pass up on the easiest of SEO techniques - which become an albatross around their neck down the line. Keyword research is one of the prime examples of the same. A lot of SEO service providers do not pay enough attention to this basic adage - and the results hence fall far from the SERP peaks they had promised to help their clients climb.

This is the basic difference where even the most affordable of SEO packages can get you results, whereas even the most high-priced of SEO packages can be impotent.

Here are some reasons why keyword research is important for an organic SEO campaign to bear fruit -

? Helps Identify Competition - A popular saying in the business circuit is that if you do not know your competition like the back of your hand, you are not going up. Thorough keyword research helps identify direct competition and thus the pros and cons of their organic SEO campaigns as well.

? Get Quality Targeted Traffic Inflow - Quality targeted traffic is only achievable when you have got the right niche consumer base's attention. And this is only possible when you are visible on the SERPs for the right keywords - to the right people!

? Better, Faster Results - SERP rankings as well as other search engine optimization goals can be attained in a faster and much more flawless manner when supplemented by proper keyword research. In fact, with the right keywords targeted, you can actually survey the competition and defeat even the staunchest of rivals - albeit with the cheapest of SEO packages in hand.

? Tracking Progress - If you have not bothered with keyword research at all, tracking the progress of your Organic SEO campaign will not only be difficult, it will be downright impossible. In fact, you need to have the right amount of keyword research put in as an effort to help track progress of the search engine optimization campaign. Failing this, not only will the affordable SEO packages' purpose fall apart, there would not be a yardstick to measure where you stand post-SEO online.

So you see, if you are a professional search engine optimization agency, you will have your hands full with problems if you have not kept your keyword research up-to-date and razor sharp from the initiation of the Organic SEO campaign.

Otherwise, the clients might not find the affordable SEO packages you provide, affordable enough - especially from the perspective of results delivered & ROI!

Article Marketing Idea: Do You Really Need an SEO Writer?

Article marketing is truly one good way to grow your business on the web and this can be done quickly by doing the correct ways and strategies. And one good thing with this marketing strategy is that it can be free, especially if you have all the time to write articles with good and quality contents.

This can be a hard thing to do the first time you launch your article marketing strategy because you have to produce a quantity of these quality articles with good content. One concern also is that you may run out of ideas for topics or information to share to your various readers.

Research is needed though, when it comes to this situation because you really have to know your targeted audience and what they are probably searching for. By acquiring this information you can create the articles that readers will find interesting and you will have more chances of getting links to your website through these articles.

This can be time consuming though, but just like any other day job you may find these interesting and no longer burdensome in the future. Once you have created hundreds of these quality content articles and made the proper submission, you can start to feel the volume traffic coming to your site after a few weeks.

Writing articles for SEO article marketing really need a lot of your time to do the proper article creation, research for various topics and submission to the different directories. But if you really need a good part of your time doing active work for your business and find no more time for article writing you can delegate this part to other SEO writers.

There are plenty of ghost writers who can really write articles with good quality and you can find these people in the Internet. There are also marketing companies who offer this kind of job because they have skilled staff that can produce these quality articles and are really skilled and proficient in this kind.

Submission of articles can also be quite burdensome if you have plenty of articles for submission and there are different sites for you to submit the individual articles. If you don't have the luxury of time also, you can acquire the services of these marketing companies who can do the individual submission for you.

Article marketing can probably be one of the most cost effective ways to market your products or services in the Internet. Since you have lots of articles created and spread to the different directories, you can have more opportunities that one of your articles has landed on top of the search results ranking in one of the major search engines.

And this is cost effective because it can be free if you do it yourself having the skills and experience of writing articles. But if you lack the time to do this article writing you can acquire the services of SEO writers or marketing companies that offer this job at costs that can be off-setted by the revenues that you earn.

6 New Tools Every SEO Should Check Out

There's some terrificly useful new tools on the market that very few SEOs are aware of or using (at least, if my experience is any indication). It's my duty, therefore, to share with some of these shiny new sites and let you explore, engage and apply to your campaigns and efforts. Hopefully, these will add great value for you, and expose them to folks who really need their help.

Link building is hard - really, really hard. Ontolo tries to productize many of the manual tasks, searches and tracking processes of link building with an extensive, diverse toolset. You can see a big list of their link building tools here, everything from .gov/.edu finders, to competitor link searches, to content research and backlink tracking/monitoring. They even have some nifty "productivity hacks" (small, simple tools to help with menial tasks like combining keywords or removing duplicates from lists).

Below is a screenshot of Ontolo's Authority Links searching tool. As you can see, there's a multitude of options including clever sorting/filtering systems.

Ontolo's Link Finder Beta

Ontolo isn't for everyone - you should be a professional or semi-pro link builder (the tools and their results, rely on a lots of prior knowledge), but for those it's geared toward, the reviews have been outstanding and Ontolo's team (Ben Wills + Garret French) are constantly upgrading the service and functionality.

Richard Baxter is constantly lauded as one of the SEO industry's best, brightest and most driven minds. I curse myself for not smuggling him into the US, forging documents so he can stay, slapping an American accent on him and chaining him to a desk at SEOmoz (OK, maybe that's a little extreme).

Luckily for you, my evil plans are for naught, and Richard's talent has born fruit for all of us in the field with his remarkable new keyword research tool (currently in beta).

SEO Gadget's Keyword Tool

You create campaigns (similar to the SEOmoz web app), plug in your Google Analytics account, and sort keywords into relevant groups. The tool then lets you visualize potential opportunity for keywords you're already ranking for and those you haven't yet targeted by combining rank data, traffic data + search volume data (via Google's AdWords API). It's a brilliantly useful tool for those seeking new ways to ID the keywords that matter and take action on the low hanging fruit.

_

Trunk.ly is a deceptively simple, currently free, application from the brilliant minds at BinaryPlex (who also built the much more full-featured Tribalytic, an Australian-focused social platform for measuring influence and share of voice).

Plug Trunk.ly into your Twitter account and you'll get a page like the one below that shows a timeline of the links you (or your friends) have tweeted.

How is that useful you say?

Because people tweet some pretty brilliant stuff and they show, through tweets, what they care about. Whether you're relationship-building with a new contact, seeking topics for linkbait or content creation, attempting to determine the impact a particular individual has on clicks/rankings via their account or just interested in what someone has to say, Trunk.ly's a great way to do it.

I've been surprised at how often I use it just to find the things I tweeted!

(BTW - Trunk.ly's currently in private beta, but Alex + Tim, the creators, may have some invites if you leave comments in the post or tweet at them)

_

You know what's a pain in the butt? Taking a screenshot of a page, pasting it into Photoshop, adding notes to it, saving the file to be small and emailing it as an attachment to a developer/designer/marketer/manager/co-worker.

In a stroke of simplicity made brilliant, markup.io lets you drag a bookmark to your broswer that will, on click, show an overlay that lets you "mark up" any page on the web with text, lines, arrows, boxes and circles of various thickness, size and color. From there, you can directly export or share the resulting screen image. It works so intuitively that our team at SEOmoz has been finding massive utility and time savings by employing it vs. a manual process.

I already knew Russ Jones and the team at Virante were pretty smart, but this time they're just making me look bad :-)

One of the biggest frustrations with our Labs LDA tool (warning, it's still in super beta and may not be particularly performant if lots of folks are actively using it) is that it doesn't recommend words and phrases to add or take away from a piece of content to help make it more "topically relevant" to a query. Building that would require a ton of very hard computer science work... Or would it?

Content Optimizer from Virante

The team from Virante got impatient (a great trait in any startup) and built their own recommendation system. It's not perfect, but in many cases, like the example above, it can help. Basically, it grabs the top results from Google, checks for words those pages have that your page doesn't and runs LDA scores for your page (through the labs tool) with and without those keywords. Pretty sweet hack, right?

A couple months ago, I presented a methodology of how to understand the ranking algorithm for an individual search result graphically to help figure out why the top ranking results are ahead of those below them (and what metrics you might need to tweak/improve to reach the top). It's certainly not a perfect strike, but many folks were excited and interested.

In fact, Andrew Wright, one of the crackerjack consultants from Bloom Media in the UK, put some serious time into improving my models and the Excel spreadsheet to make it more usable, understandable and useful.

SERPs Analysis from Ben Huff

SERPs Analysis via Andrew Wright

But, that's not all. SEOmoz's own Ben Huff looked over Andrew's work and had some tweaks of his own. In the Box.net folder I've linked to, you'll find both versions of the Excel worksheet. By Q2 of next year, we hope to have this SERPs analysis system included in our web app (so they'll be no need to go crazy in Excel). In the meantime, though, we invite you to check out the work of these two, building one on the other (Ben Huff worked on the initial version with me for the face-off in London) and give feedback. It may not be the most scalable way to analyze a search result, but currently, it's the most comprehensive and likely to produce a good answer.

What Is Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization is a process of choosing the most appropriate targeted keyword phrases related to your site and ensuring that this ranks your site highly in search engines so that when someone searches for specific phrases it returns your site on tops. It basically involves fine tuning the content of your site along with the HTML and Meta tags and also involves appropriate link building process. The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL and Ask Jeeves. Search engines keep their methods and ranking algorithms secret, to get credit for finding the most valuable search-results and to deter spam pages from clogging those results. A search engine may use hundreds of factors while ranking the listings where the factors themselves and the weight each carries may change continually. Algorithms can differ so widely that a webpage that ranks #1 in a particular search engine could rank #200 in another search engine. New sites need not be "submitted" to search engines to be listed. A simple link from a well established site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to spider its contents. It can take a few days to even weeks from the referring of a link from such an established site for all the main search engine spiders to commence visiting and indexing the new site.

If you are unable to research and choose keywords and work on your own search engine ranking, you may want to hire someone to work with you on these issues.

Search engine marketing and promotion companies, will look at the plan for your site and make recommendations to increase your search engine ranking and website traffic. If you wish, they will also provide ongoing consultation and reporting to monitor your website and make recommendations for editing and improvements to keep your site traffic flow and your search engine ranking high. Normally your search engine optimization experts work with your web designer to build an integrated plan right away so that all aspects of design are considered at the same time.
